We celebrate today the end of the Great War.

Every ally is entitled to commemorate this common victory, but this site being dedicated to French victories I will only recall a few facts about France in World War I.

 

- 1,5 millions Frenchmen died during the Great War (for a population of 40 millions).

- 27% of the young French males between 18 and 28 died during the war.

- About 80% of the frontline was held by the French army.

- In 1918, during the last major offensive of the war, the French had more divisions involved than all of the other allies put together.

- Out of 10 French males between 18 and 60 in 1914, 2 were dead in 1918, 2 injured beyond any possibility ever to work again, 1 injured in combat.

- Verdun remains today the longest and one of the bloodiest battles of all times. There were around 350,000 casualties on either side. During the 10-month-battle for Douaumont, an average 40 shells/minute were shot. The experts believe it will take 7 more centuries to clear Verdun of all bombs.

You will find  below two excerpts of music.

- The 4th symphony "A Vitoria" (The Victory) by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1919). You will easily recognize the National Anthem quoted by the composer.

- The 3rd symphony "De Bello Gallico" by French composer Vincent d'Indy (1918).

 

Nous fêtons aujourd'hui la fin de la Grande Guerre.

Chaque allié est en droit de célébrer cette victoire commune, mais ce site étant dédié aux victoires françaises, je rappellerai seulement quelques faits concernant la France dans la 1ère Guerre Mondiale.

Two flags taken to the Austrians are still visible today in the town's church and the town received the nickname of Saint-Jean-Belle-Défense.
