The Americans are impressed by the French resistance and General Ridgway writes to his troop: "The bayonet may not be the new secret weapon of the UN troops, but it has an obvious agressive power. I have heard twice about the bayonet in Korea, used by the Turks, then by the French. Remind all troops that this instrument was not only invented to open cans". (my translation, source here).

Sur la côte 281 (Arrow Head), le Bataillon français de Corée repousse des forces chinoises très supérieures sous un déluge d'artillerie (25000 obus). Les combats finissent à l'arme blanche. On dénombre 19 morts français, plus de 600 chinois. Les Américains sont impressionnés par la résistance française et le Gal Ridgway écrit dans un ordre du jour : "La baïonette n'est peut-être pas la dernière arme secrète de l'armée des Nations-Unies, mais elle a un pouvoir agressif indiscutable. J'ai entendu parler deux fois de la baïonette dans la guerre de Corée, une fois par les Turcs, une autre par les Français. Il sera rappelé à toutes les unités que cet instrument n'a pas été inventé uniquement pour ouvrir les boîtes de conserve". (Source)

With 70,000 men, Villars fights Prinz Eugen and Marlborough (110,000 men) in Malplaquet. This can be considered a tactical defeat for the French, as they left the ground at the end of the day (after Villars was injured). But they retreated in perfect order, according to Villars' plan, and lost around 10,000 men (against 25,000 losses for Great Alliance). Exhausted, the Allies were unable to proceed with the planned invasion of France. This changed the course of the war in favor of the French and was followed by the French victories of Vendôme in Villaviciosa and Villars in Denain. Marlborough's unability to obtain any decisive victory against the French earned him a funny little song French children still sing at school.

Cette bataille d'arrêt peut être considérée comme une défaite française, car les Français se replièrent après la blessure de Villars. Mais ils se retirèrent en bon ordre sous la conduite de Boufflers, selon le plan de Villars, en infligeant des pertes beaucoup plus lourdes à l'ennemi (environ 10000 pertes françaises contre 25000 pertes pour la Grande Alliance). Epuisés, les Alliés furent incapables de mener à bien l'invasion prévue de la France. C'est le début du redressement de la France, qui se poursuivra avec les victoires de Vendôme à Villaviciosa et de Villars à Denain. L'incapacité de Marlborough à obtenir une victoire décisive contre les Français lui vaudra une petite chanson que les écoliers français chantent toujours (mironton, mironton, mirontaine).
